The IDDA is launching radiological and radioecological research in the territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan liberated from occupation.

The Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA), which conducts experimental studies and radiological research in the field of nuclear science and technology within the country, is one of the responsible implementing bodies for sub-action 6.1.1, titled “Conducting Radiological and Radioecological Research”, under the First State Program on the Great Return to the Liberated Territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Starting from October, the Agency will commence radiological and radioecological research in the liberated territories in accordance with the detailed action plan established by the relevant working group formed under this program.

As part of the preparatory efforts to fulfill this sub-action, the Agency has developed several Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for both field and laboratory-based radiological studies. These SOPs were prepared in line with the advisory documents of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Based on the developed procedures, the Agency conducted presentations and a joint training exercise on September 22–23, 2023, involving specialists from both the IDDA and the relevant units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan. These sessions aimed to prepare experts who will be involved in the implementation of the sub-action.

On September 23, at the premises of the Agency’s Nuclear Research Department, the training continued with the practical application of modern radiological and advanced radio-spectrometric tools. These were used for the detection, identification, and analysis of nuclear and radioactive materials, as well as radiological mapping of the territories.

During the training, participating experts acquired hands-on knowledge in searching for and detecting radioactive substances, identifying isotopic compositions of nuclear materials, and implementing necessary response measures in the field.

In line with the plan, the Innovation and Digital Development Agency will begin its radiological and radioecological research activities in the city of Shusha, with the outcomes to be submitted to the relevant government authorities.
